Harsh New Laws Are Protecting Fossil Fuel Companies

Which do you think is worse? A protest? Or an attempted murder? Oil companies want the
courts to treat them the same … and the courts are going along with it. Protesting a pipeline can now get you a decade in prison and $100k in fines. As climate change protests
get bigger and more successful, the opposition is finding
new ways to shut them down. The Standing Rock protests delayed the Dakota Access pipeline for months. So oil companies retaliated, by pushing states to change the laws so protesters could be
hit with massive jail terms. When Greenpeace activists suspended themselves from a bridge to protest an oil channel in Texas, they were charged with third-degree felonies. When protestors tried to block the Bayou Bridge pipeline in Louisiana, they were charged with felony trespassing even though they were protesting in public waters. Similar laws have now been passed in: Texas Louisiana Indiana Missouri Oklahoma Tennessee North Dakota And Wisconsin. Laws are pending in: Illinois Pennsylvania And Ohio. The federal government is now
considering even harsher penalties … that could put people in prison for 20 years. Could you imagine 20 years in prison just for doing this? It turns out, all these laws are flowing from the same dirty source: ALEC. ALEC is a conservative lobbying group made up of state legislators, big companies and trade organizations. It includes Duke Energy, Chevron and Koch Industries. Koch contributes heavily to ALEC and pushed for the Dakota Access pipeline. Many of the state legislators
who passed these new laws have ties to ALEC. The laws hinge on the idea of protecting “critical infrastructure.” But civil liberties experts say these new laws are unconstitutional because they muzzle free speech. And the laws are so broad they could end up criminalizing
all kinds of activism. Oil and gas pipelines are everywhere. So laws like these could
be coming to your state. What do you think? Would these new laws
stop you from taking action?

  2. Understand, that as long as you are buying oil, somebody will find a way to supply it. You are playing wack-a-mole. My 20 solar pannels generate enough electricity to drive my Tesla Model 3 28,000 miles a year, in Ohio, and they don't even all face south. The average power purchase agreement for wind power in the great plains is 2 cents a kwh. My Tesla can go 4 miles with one of those 2 cent kwhs, and is AWD, and does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, enough to throw you right back in your seat.

So about these laws. What ever happened to this part of the constitution?

The Eighth Amendment (Amendment VIII) of the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government from imposing excessive bail, excessive fines, or cruel and unusual punishments.
